Inside Westfield Stratford City shopping centre
Looking for a part time, temporary Christmas job at Westfield Stratford City shopping centre? Here’s our guide to getting employed at the mall.
Christmas is a busy time for Westfield Stratford City shopping centre. Extra demand from customers means that many of the shops and stores need extra staff. Here are a few hints and tips that may help you to find work…
1) Apply at the right time, get in first if you can. For the Christmas period, many of the shops recruit in September, October and November. The larger stores may advertise their temp jobs on their websites, but many only advertise in-store. So our first tip is to check out the list of stores and then start contacting the shops that you’d like to work for. Some of the shops will have application forms that you can pick up in-store. For example, Boots began to advertise their Christmas vacancies at the beginning of September.
2) Make the first move! If you want a job, you will have to contact the shops yourself. Westfield Stratford City mall usually does not recruit for the shops inside the centre – you have to be pro-active and contact the shops yourself.
For example, If you are interested in working for Topman or Topshop you should contact the Store Manager directly and “you should submit a CV and covering letter for the role you are applying for. The minimum age for Sales Advisors is 16 years old.”
For Boots Christmas jobs, they’ve set up a website where you can see the vacancies they have. Next also have a website where you can see their vacancies in the London area.
Don’t forget about your local Job Centre – they can offer advice, and hold lists of jobs. Their website lists shop jobs in London.
3) Do your research. Shops and stores will want you to show an interest in the shop you want to work for! Employers look for product knowledge, passion and personalities that work well in teams, and in customer service situations.
If you do get an interview at Boots, be prepared to answer questions such as “Why do you want to work for Boots?”, “What could you bring to Boots?” “Give me an example of a time that you demonstrated excellent customer service” etc.
4) Get the right training. Before Westfield Stratford City opened, John Lewis spent weeks teaching many of their new staff how to read and write, after managers found that their new recruits could not even fill in basic forms. If you’d like to improve your skills before applying for retail jobs, there are organisations that can help you. Westfield Stratford City is in Newham. They have a workplace organisation that helps train Newham residents for work. The government also runs other learning for work schemes.
Good luck with your job hunt.
